A Brief Note To Flyer Fan
Sorry your team lost in overtime last night, in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals. That must suck, especially as it seems that the clinching goal wasn't a clean kill. Having it happen in your building, and having to watch the victorious Hawks skate around with the Cup, also must have sucked all over.
And to those of you, especially in my Facebook list, who want to take the glass half-full take of being happy the team got this far... well, I don't pretend to know much about hockey anymore, but twenty years of watching it tells me that's just not how it works. Your team was a last-minute addition to the playoff field that only got good in the post-season. You can even say that they weren't all that good in that run, since the run involved three game losing streaks to the Bruins and a two-gamer to the Hawks.
So there is no solace to the "if we just get our goalie situation fixed, we'll win it all next year" opinion. Part of the reason why I gave up on your sport was the sense that the post-season was just completely random - Team With Hot Goalie Wins -- and this run did nothing to change that take.
So, um, good run and all. Thanks for putting the wood to the multi-sport Boston fans, and I know some Devil fans who were good and bummed over that outcome, too. There's also the fact that you might be the most galling team possible for Canadian Fan to have lost to as well. Finally, your run bought us a few weeks of distraction from the upcoming Eagles rebuilding season, which is also going to be nice and painful. That's all good. All in all, you've got to be pleased with the season.
Or not. It's your sport; do what you want with it.
Moving on.

The clinching goal WAS completely clean--it's just that it wasn't immediately obvious to observers on the ice. The puck was across the line and tucked under the goal padding.
There was a moment of confusion when people thought the puck might have been stopped by the goalie, but once the puck was found in the net the result was indisputable.
I think after this long, the Hawks won't care about how it happened. As for Flyers I'm sure their time will come soon.
