10) After not being able to overpay for Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth, decided they needed to overpay for someone
9) Certain that if they put him in warmth, grass and pennant races, Wells won't ever get hurt again
8) By trading Mike Napoli and his huge power production behind the plate, they get to finally play defensive catchers that won't help them win games
7) By pairing Wells with Torii Hunter, they can have an outstanding defensive outfield in 2005
6) Think that his contract can't nearly be as bad in lousy American dollars

You can say that he is overpaid, he is - not worth $20+million per. But the injury tag associated with him is bogus. If you check some stats you'll see he has averaged 148 games played per year over the past 9 seasons.
He's also played badly while being hurt, as any of his fantasy owners can attest. And missing 15 games a year isn't exactly putting injury issues to rest. It's not as if he's been getting worn down with playoff appearances.
I suspect he'll have a good year there, but 4 years is unconscionable...
