NBA Pick Challenge Update: True Pain

Staff writer The Truth and I compete in a head-to-head playoff predictions battle to see who is the bigger idiot. The loser has to do something that is deeply shameful and personally repugnant on this blog.

Rules: Pick all playoff series. 10 points for getting the winning team right, 10 more for calling the right number of games, 5 if you are one off. Each subsequent round doubles the points on each pick. That's it.

With the Spurs taking out the Bugs tonight, I'm now up 50 points (235 to 185, 10-2 in series versus 8-4)... but since points double every round and we've gone in very different directions for Round 3, it's still anybody's shamefest.

NBA Pick Challenge 2, Electric Boogaloo - Update

Staff writer The Truth and I compete in a head-to-head playoff predictions battle to see who is the bigger idiot. The loser has to do something that is deeply shameful and personally repugnant on this blog. Last year, Truth had to write a love post to the type of fantasy sports owner that he hates; it was 500 words of enema for him.

This year, I think the loser might have to watch TBS after the playoffs are over, or just stab ourselves in the kidney. TBS IS VERY FUNNY. OBESE BLACK MEN DOING MINSTREL SITCOMS ARE VERY FUNNY. SMUG BLOATED WHITE MEN DOING SITCOM DAD CRAP IS VERY FUNNY. OBEY. OBEY. OBEY.

Rules: Pick all playoff series. 10 points for getting the winning team right, 10 more for calling the right number of games, 5 if you are one off. Each subsequent round doubles the points on each pick. That's it.
Fighting his way through the chill of my Macbethian witch predictions, Truth is tied in the early going, and has an edge in the Celtics series. But once the Jazz closed out the Rockets, we took the big lead.

Shooter Picks / Truth Picks

Boston in 4 / Boston in 5 -- Pending
Detroit in 6 / Detroit in 4 = 20 to Shooter, 10 to Truth
Toronto in 6 / Orlando in 5 - 20 to Truth
Cleveland in 6 / Cleveland in 6 -- 20 to both
Lakers in 5 / Lakers in 5 = 15 to both
Hornets in 7 / Mavericks in 7 - 10 to Shooter
Phoenix in 6 / Phoenix in 6 - 0 to both
Utah in 6 / Rockets in 6 -- 20 to Shooter

ALCS and NLCS picks

After going a perfect 0-for-4 in the first round of my MLB picks, I'm dying to get back in the mix of things as part of our little game of humiliation. Luckily, with the points doubling in this round, there's still time for a rousing comeback. (Well, OK, no. But a man can dream.)

As before, pick the winner and the number of games. If you're right on the team, it's worth 20 points; if you are right on the games, another 20. One off on games gets you 10. Picks need to be in before the next round starts.

For everyone that picked before, it's time for your next round, in the comments. Remember, a free FTT T-shirt goes to the non-Tool winner, so even if you didn't get in last round, pick now.

Round 1 Standings

Joeski 60
BD 35
Andrew 35
Ninja 30
Klondike 30
DC Scrap 25
Vegas 25
Original DJ 20
Zach 15
Truth 15
SDuck 10
JCobra 0
DMtShooter 0

Update... for the record, I called Holliday's kill shot homer last night, live, before it happened. Because I Am Just That Prescient. (And because Micah Owings has ownings me before...)

In our little game, Joeski still leads with 60 points, but DC Scrap jumped 30 points to 55. Only three of us picked the Rocks to win round 2, proving that teams that win 21 of 22 just don't get the respect they deserve, really...

Win A Shirt and Enjoy Our Shame: MLB Playoff Challenge

OK, Nation... fresh from the riotous success of last year's NBA Playoff Dare Bet, it's time for our MLB Playoff Picks. Best of all, we're opening this up to the whole Nation.

Here's how it works. You call your shot in all MLB playoff series, both the team that wins and the number of games. For the winning team, you get 10 points, and if they win in the number of games you picked, that's an extra 10. Missing it by just one game gets you 5. The stakes double in each succeeding round. Picks must be in before the start of every series, so act fast and keep an eye on how things are going.

I'll be going against The Truth and the Five Tool Ninja in our continuing battle to see who is the biggest idiot; our picks will appear in this post later today. The losers have to subject themselves to a truly hideous public punishment that will be viewable here on Five Tool Tool. The winner will get to indulge in a epic case of Ha, Ha finger-pointing.

Finally, the top Commenter will win their own free Garment of Greatness -- i.e., a Free Five Tool Tool shirt. So make your picks in the comments now, and get in the game!

One On One Picks Update

To review... the rules: FTT Rivals DMtShooter and The Truth pick all playoff series. We get 10 points for getting the winning team right, 10 more for calling the right number of games, 5 for being one game off.

The picks...

Shooter Picks / Truth Picks

Toronto in 6 / New Jersey in 6
Detroit in 5 / Detroit in 5
Miami in 6 / Chicago in 6
Houston in 6 / Houston in 6
Cleveland in 4 / Cleveland in 5
Phoenix in 4 / Phoenix in 6
San Antonio in 5 / San Antonio in 6
Dallas in 5 / Dallas in 6

The Score:

Truth: 10 for the Bulls, 15 for the Cavs, 15 for the Pistons, 15 for Suns, 15 for Spurs, 20 for the Nets, for 90.

Shooter: 20 for the Cavs, 15 for the Pistons, 20 for Spurs, 15 for Suns, for 70.

Our picks are the same for Jazz-Rockets, so the first round lead will be Truth +20.

2nd round picks (for the series that start this weekend)...

Shooter / Truth

Suns in 7 / Suns in 6
Pistons in 6 / Pistons in 7
Cavs in 5 / Nets in 6
Warriors in 6 / Warriors in 6

Update: With tonight's closeout in Chicago, I pull in 40 points to the Truth's 30, cutting the lead to 10. Neither of us were smart enough to pull the string on the Jazz. It's 100-90, Truth.

Further update... The Cavs finally end the Nets, giving me a huge 30 point bump to the Truth's zero. Neither of us had the Spurs, so the second round is closed at 120-100, Shooter.

Third round picks, where the points double once more, soon...

Round 3

Shooter / Truth

Spurs in 6 / Spurs 6
Pistons in 6 / Pistons in 5

Ed. Note: We both win 60 for the Spurs winning in 5. Shooter 180, Truth 160.

Finals - The Truth goes for the underdog in a last-ditch attempt to close the gap.

Spurs in 5 / Cavs in 6

One on One

So to celebrate the end of the worst regular season in the history of the NBA, The Truth and I will compete in a head-to-head playoff predictions battle to see who is the bigger idiot. The loser has to do something that is deeply shameful and personally repugnant on this blog. (Details later. That's called suspense.)

Rules: Pick all playoff series. 10 points for getting the winning team right, 10 more for calling the right number of games, 5 if you are one off. Each subsequent round doubles the points on each pick. That's it. Predictions from each man will be posted later tonight.

Truth, you're going down harder than Larry Bird did when I played Doc in the classic PC game. Get (even more) used to the feel of shattered backboard glass in your hair. It's going to start ugly, then get bestial.

Ed. Note: Here's the picks.
