Countdown To Armageddon

Today in Milwaukee on a neutral field, Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter at the Astros (and hasn't Houston Fan had a fun enough weekend?).

Considering that Big Z was last seen talking about a serious medical problem, giving Cub Fan their latest case of fatalism... this has led most to think that the Cubs are the favorite to represent the NL in the World Series. (And yes, they should be. The other teams in the NL playoffs will likely be the Mets, Phillies and Dodgers, which is to say, three incredibly flawed teams that don't match up at all well with the Cubs.)

Now, I'm pretty sure that Cub Fan isn't going to be overconfident at this point. A century of loss, most of them not even close, has a certain effect on people. But if Zambrano and Rich Harden can stay healthy -- admittedly, not a sure bet, but given how they've managed Harden's work load, not impossible -- it's hard to see how they lose a series.

Once they get to the Series, they'll most likely face the Red Sox, just because God enjoys tormenting the wicked and righteous alike, because It's Funny.

Because Boston Fan is now enjoying Big Karmic Retribution (see Bowl, Super, and Brady, Tom), the Cubs will win.

And when that happens, the National League will finally have a miserable road team Nation to match what the AL's non-Sawx/Yankee franchises have been enduring for lo these many years.

Enjoy!

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy

Here we are Cubs fan, the end of the season and your team in first place by two games. Your magic number is 2 with 3 to play. The Cubs destiny is in their own hands. No wonder you're so nervous.

The Cubs should have put this away already but decided to drop 3 straight to the 90 loss Florida Marlins. The same Florida Marlins who took 6 out of 6 versus the Cubs this year. You think they're wishing they played in the Central division? And the fans in Chicago are getting antsy for some Cubs wins.

The good news is the Brewers have to play their last three against the Padres who are fighting for a playoff spot. The bad news is the Cubs still can blow their next three against the Reds. Come on Cubs, all you need to do is win 2 out of 3. No problem right? Wrong. This is the Cubs. Something will probably happen keeping them from reaching the playoffs.

I hope that isn't true. I'd much prefer to see the Cubs make the playoffs and then go down in flames. In a perfect world, they'd make it to the World Series and implode on a national stage. Plus, there's nothing worse than making it that far and losing. And I'm sure there are one or two jinxes left to catch up with the Cubs. I was delighted to see this story on Deadspin earlier in the week. Basically the story tells of how the Cubs have already sold and printed up World Series tickets. Always a good idea for a team like the Cubs to taunt fate. I mean, I know the ball club itself makes dumb moves but it must be contagious.

So Cub fans, hang in there. I'm sure nothing bad is going to happen this weekend. That will come later. In the meantime, enjoy this clip.
